Activities & Sports
Next to the Sangro River and surrounded by breathtaking peaks, Scontrone is a sport-lover’s paradise! In the summer, the pleasant weather favors leisurely strolls on cool wooded paths winding through the green mountains, vigorous mountain biking on steep slopes, and horseback riding along the riverbanks or alpine passes. Rich with trout, Sangro river is a little know but highly acclaimed site for fly-fishing—Scontrone native Carlo Baldassini honed his skills on the Sangro, and went on to become a champion competitive fly fisher. In the winter, visitors can cross country ski to a nearby village, or fly down the challenging slopes of Roccaraso, a famous ski resort only 12 km from Scontrone.
Equestrian Center: Trekking on Horseback
Situated on the shore of the Sangro River, the Horse Center - "Rù Scium" (pronounced "rü shoom") provides riding lessons and excursions for equestrians of all levels, including the disabled. The sessions vary from short, half-hour lessons to all day excursions in the surrounding countryside. A great way to explore the region, exercise and have fun!
Fly Fishing
Proof positive that Villa Scontrone is home to topflight flyi-fishing, world champion Carlo Baldassini was inspired to take up the sport on the banks of the Sangro River. The fishing sites are as charming as they are diverse, ranging in technicality from the Villa Scontrone’s central bridge to deep gorges chiseled from centuries of rushing water.
Carlo Baldassini My passion for fishing began 30 years ago on the Sangro—the particularity of the river inspired me to devote my life to fly-fishing. I became so adept that I started to compete in local fly-fishing matches, which eventually led me to compete on a world level. To date, I have participated in eleven world championships with the pleasure of winning the World Championships once, and the European Championships twice. I’ve competed in many countries: Australia, New Zealand, USA, Wales, Canada, Norway, The Czech Republic, France, Poland, England, Ireland and Italy. Fly-fishing is multi-faceted; because of the self-made artificial baits and the technical throws, you never stop learning. Every fly-fishing trip is different, and traveling to new and exciting locals will help you adapt to the changing terrain and further polish your skills. I salute all fly fishermen, and wish you good luck!
Trekking & Mountain Biking
We recommend exploring the green, rocky landscape of our mountains by foot or by bike. On a typical jaunt on one of our well-marked trails through the alpine landscape, you’ll discover footpaths made by ancient tribes and military brigades, as well as the breathtaking flora and fauna of this relatively untouched wilderness.
Scontrone Excursion Association
Born 13 years ago to foster a new generation of mountain lovers, the Scontrone Excursion Association organizes hiking trips, alpine awareness meetings, manages trial improvements and fire control measures, and collaborates with well-known international mountain climbers.
Skiing
For skiers, Scontrone is a strategic base, only 20 minutes by car from the famous slopes of Roccaraso-Rivisondoli. Centrally located between many different resorts, the village is a quaint escape from the more assimilated resort towns.
The flat valley terrain offers a perfect environment for cross-country skiers, who can ski on paths from village to village while exploring the natural beauty of the dense, ancient forest. A day of exercise in the fresh air can be “Italianized” by stopping in each village for the necessary fortifications: fresh bread, cheese, sausages and a good glass of local wine.
Kick It!
The Commune of Scontrone has built a professional-style soccer field, measuring 100m x 60m. The field is normally used by the local squads and area children, but can be rented to visiting corporate teams, professionals, and summer vacationers. Stop by and join a pick up game!
Flying
Scontrone boasts a small airport, where licensed pilots can land planes. Delta Club “The Pojana” is the name of the association that manages the airport, known to the locals as "Campo Dragone," or "The Dragon Field." The members of the Delta Club maintain the technical features of the field themselves:
