Surrounding Area
Scontrone is surrounded by a delectable array of quaint towns that make up the county of Comunita Montana Altosangro & Alto Piano Cinquemiglia as illustrated in the map to the right. These villages are all within driving distance and make for great excursions in nature, history, culture and shopping. During the summer months, it is easy to find a festival somewhere every week.
- Pescasseroli, famous for being the birth place of Benedetto Croce, lies in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise National Park. Apart from summer tourism, connected to the park and nature, there is also skiing in the winter.
- Opi is a small village pearched on top of a mountain, and famous for it’s flower festival
- In Civitella Alfedena, apart from the Wolf Museum one can visit an area dedicated to the linx and the beautiful area of the Camosciara.
- In Villetta Barrea, there is the Transumanza Museum dedicated to the life in Molise and Abruzzo and one will also find many important noble palaces.
- To the northwest of Scontrone, next to Barrea is a wonderful lake to visit with spectacular views year round. At Barrea you may find a lovely historic center, particularly noted for its recreation of the Passion around Easter.
- Heading down to Alfedena there are very important archeological sites to visit as well as the forest and the mountain lake of Spaccata.
Roccaraso and Rivisondoli are famous for fantastic ski runs and hotels.
- Pescocostanzo is noted not only for antique traditions in art forms such as iron, gold work, and tombolo (ancient yarn spinning tools) but also for the unheard of beauty of it's ancient streets,and palaces.
- Heading towards the Peligna Valley there is the large territory of the Community of Roccapia, which includes many interesting forests, designated pic-nic areas and it represents a passageway between the Alto Sangro and the Peligna Valley.
- Ateleta - famous for the presence of truffels. There is also an Agriculture Museum to visit.
